Description

Hello everyone! :D

Another season has come and gone, and can only mean one thing: It's time for my full review of The Ridonculous Race!

Before I begin, I would just like to send out a HUGE thank you for reading all of my reviews for each episode this season. That's the thing that always keeps me going. My page has grown incredibly over the past month, and now, I have more watchers than ever at this point. For those watchers, thank you! I promise, you will be in store for a lot in these upcoming months.

Unlike my Total Drama reviews, I will be reviewing The Ridonculous Race on 5 different sections, compared to 3: Cast, Episodes, Development, Big Moments, and the Finalists/Winners. Derailment or Bad Development has really hurt Total Drama in the past, and that success is key for a good season. And after TDAS, I feel as if picking the right winners is also important to a season's success.

From there, I will take the overall average and give a final season ranking based on that.

Alright, let's get started!

***

1. Cast

For the cast, I am going to give a short review of each team that competed on the Ridonculous Race, and give my honest opinion on how I feel about them.

Leonard and Tammy (LARPers) - I said this at the start of the season, and I'll say it again: Why is Leonard in this? Leonard was one of the least likable contestants in all of TDPI, and definitely one of the most pointless. And Tammy is about the same, except that she didn't compete in TDPI, unlike Leonard. With all of that being considered, I can safely say that the writers made the right decision by eliminating them first. And honestly, that's probably the only why they were in this. Maybe the team needed a fodder team? Either way, they didn't do much, and when they did, it was pretty annoying.

Gerry and Pete (Tennis Rivals) - I was really expecting a lot more from these guys. :( In my original prediction, I thought that they would be the main antagonists of TDRR, due to the fact that they will combine their aggressiveness and that would make them a very hard team to beat. Instead, they acted more like Tennis Players, and not Tennis Rivals. I'm serious, I'm not sure why they were called the Tennis Rivals, because they seemed to get along very well. But no worries. For a fodder team, I enjoyed them.

Mary and Ellody (Geniuses) - Another team that ended up disappointing me big time. I had hope that the Geniuses wouldn't be as bland as they looked. Too bad to say that they were. Ellody was decent, but Mary didn't do anything most of the time, and didn't even speak until Episode 4! Did I forget to mention that they were also eliminated in Episode 4? Yeah, I don't think we will be seeing them again anytime soon.

Laurie and Miles (Vegans) - If there's one thing I can be happy about with the Ridonculous Race, it's that they got rid of all of the fodder teams early on. Laurie and Miles didn't really have any story line early on. In all honesty, they weren't as fun as I thought they would be. Laurie did have the potential to seek "revenge" on Dwayne early on in the season, but sadly, that went nowhere and they ended up getting tortured beyond tortured. :( With everything Miles did in that last episode, it was disappointing to see them go. But I don't think they would've done much else TBH.

Tom and Jen (Fashion Bloggers) - One of the many surprise teams of TDRR, I can't believe how likable Tom and Jen actually were! Their personality actually grew on me, and I grew to like them. And they even had a plot! And you know what? It was well written as well! :D The fact that they were able to survive their friendship conflicts and be even closer to each other than before, is just simply incredible! Credit to the writers on that!

Kelly and Taylor (Mother and Daughter) - Alright, this is a tough team to review. On one side, yes, their development was absolutely astonishing compared to what I thought it would be. But after everything we had to listen to from this team, they were hard to watch. Kelly drives me absolutely crazy! She is not strict at all, and really just takes all of her daughter's criticism without any extra thoughts. It wasn't until the end of their run until they FINALLY started to smack some sense into her! And Taylor...UGH! Amy 2.0. And for those of you who don't know already, I can't stand Amy. They might be getting along more now than they once were, but I don't think Taylor learned a ton from the race.

Jay and Mickey (Adversity Twins) - Eh, I never really cared for them at any point of the race. I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but when I first saw these two characters, I immeditely thought to myself: "Cameron 2.0". Sadly for them, they are even more hopeless than Cameron. They have every disease or disorder known to man, but I do admire them for never really giving up and getting as far as they did. They didn't stay too long, either, so that's a plus, right? :)

Chet and Lorenzo (Stepbrothers) - Yes, I picked these guys to win the million dollars. :unimpressed: I have no clue why, but I did. Their plot at the start of the season was clear, but wow, was it annoying? Every last thing they did on screen for the first 6 episodes was yell and scream at each other. They started to get a little bit closer with constant arguing, but it wasn't any easier to watch. Finally, they become Best Friends in Episode 13 and they ended on much better terms than they were at during the first few episodes. As far as returning though, I don't think I ever want to see them back on Total Drama.

Rock and Spud (Rockers) - If you ask me, I think that this was a surprisingly likable team. :) Many people thought that they were going to be pathetic fodder, and BY FAR one of the most annoying teams in the race. But...that wasn't them at all. In terms of determination, they were probably one of the most realistic teams in the race. Rock's encouragement and willingness made him one of my favorite characters this season. Spud has a few funny moments, and got better from a competitive viewpoint, but I never thought he was as likable as Rock was. Still, I'm glad they did well, and I think that they could possibly return in a future season.

Dwayne and Junior (Father and Son) - Another nice surprise out of this entire cast! At first, I think most people saw this team as Junior acting more like a Justin Bieber wannabe, and Dwayne being a bit pathetic. Instead, Junior was actually the more sane teammate, and he actually did a very good job in most of the challenges! And dare I say it: Dwayne was a great character this season. It took a little while for him to grow on me, but towards the end of their race, I started to like him more and more. I think they could've actually stayed for a few more episodes TBH. But I won't complain too much. Their ending was satisfying enough for me.

Noah and Owen (Reality TV Pros) - Ok, I'll admit it, I was very happy to see this team together. I said before the season started that I wanted Izzy and Noah on the same team, but then everyone would root for them, and it would be obvious. But I was very happy with how Noah and Owen turned out. Noah FINALLY gets a decent storyline with Emma, and for the most part, it turned out great and now he has a girlfriend! :D Owen...I could've lived without him for the majority of the season. Let's face it, did we really need him that much besides for comic relief? But hey, if it means more Noah, gold lines, and a new couple, I will take it. I also thought that 8th place was a perfect spot for them, despite thinking they would make it further. But like Owen said, he already won a season, and that they'll be on the next season of *static*. ;)

Crimson and Ennui (Goths) - I originally ranked them 17th on my initial preseason character rankings. What a mistake, probably the biggest mistake I have ever made! I am absolutely shocked on how great this team ended up being. Knowing their personality, I figured that they wouldn't be that fun to watch. But really, they found plot. They found plenty of fantastic storylines that made them one of the most likable teams in the race. And despite dating for 3 years (which in the TD universe in like 100 years of marriage), they still developed their own relationship in Episode 11, making it a heartfelt moment with their shortly lived "ungothed" look. :D

But one thing that blew me away the most, was actually their amazing gameplay! :O_o: They managed to win 3 challenges, 2 back to back, and they would normally place high. And honestly, if they didn't, they would make up for it by having one of their best episodes! Out of the  4 potential winners I have for this season, Crimson and Ennui are one of them. And for good reason as well! :)

Ryan and Stephanie (Daters/Haters) - FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. :cries: Ryan and Stephanie were all over the place in the Ridonculous Race. One one side, they were extremely tough competitors. Even during their worst moments, they were still tough competitors, and they sometimes even worked better during the race because of that. I would say that they were somewhat deserving of their Final 6 ranking because of this.

But on the flip side, THEY. WERE. ANNOYING. After their initial breakup, Stephanie became one of the most unlikable characters in the series history. She would just scream the entire episode, and we would have to suffer with it through Ryan. Ryan had some bright spots, normally with Carrie at the end of the season, showing that the teams can actually interact well. Personally, I figured they would be gone within 8 episodes, but they managed to exceed my expectations and get back together just before the end of their 23 episode run. But I honestly hope we don't see them back ever again.

Carrie and Devin (Best Friends) - I would say that a good 90% of the fandom picked these two to win before the race started. And I don't blame them. A romance plot of "does he love me?", a little bit of blandness, and the extension of their plot basically tried to make them as close to Zoke 2.0 as they could get. Personally, I thought they were a bit better written than Mike and Zoey, but that's no excuse for this team. They should've been eliminated as early as Episode 19, and left with no problems. Yes, it's great that they are officially a couple, but I also feel like they were forced out of the race for nothing when Devin was injured. With a season of happy endings and development, I'm not sure why the writers decided to go that way with Devin at the end.

Overall, they were both a bit bland, and I hate to say it, but they were overrated. I'm glad they didn't win, but I am very surprised they didn't, at least based on how they were setting it up.

Emma and Kitty (Sisters) - Another one of my 4 teams that I thought deserved to win. One of the main reasons I fell in love with this team early on is because Emma reminds me of a well developed Courtney, and Kitty is practically Lindsay with a brain. And they turned into one of the best developed, and definitely one of the most likable teams in the race. I am shocked that they got as far as they did with their story (despite picking them to be in the Final 2). But with all things considered, maybe they should've been in the Final 2. They were definitely playing very strong the whole time and never even came close to giving up. But the best part of this team was watching Emma grow to appreciate Kitty more throughout the race, and with her romance with Noah, she realized that they are both more important than the million dollars, and that made her feel more like a winner than a million could've done. Like I said, she is a well developed Courtney. This is the plot I have wanted her to have for YEARS now, and the writers somehow made it work with a solid character and team overall.

Jacques and Josee (Ice Dancers) - This is going to be a tough one. I got more criticism for my opinion on Jacques and Josee than anything I have EVER put on dA. And I'll be brutally honest again, I did not think they were as great as people are making them out to be. Did they get better towards the end of the season? Yes, definitely! Did they make a lot more strategic moves towards the end? Absolutely, and they made them a lot better. But sadly, similar to Mal, they didn't do anything for the first half of the season. And with their constant cheating in a couple of the challenges, it made them really hard to root for when it was all said and done.

I actually think that they may have potential left, and that maybe they could make a plot for them to be better people, like Josee stated in the finale.

Aside from that, I will say that they definitely played the best physical game, winning 8 CHALLENGES! :O

Geoff and Brody (Surfer Dudes) - Without a doubt the surprise team of the season. Even in their initial run to the Final 6, they went way further than I thought they would. Their gameplay was unbelievable for what they had to work with. And even with the little plot they had, the writers somehow made it work, and it made Geoff and Brody the best bromance on television! :XD: Seriously, I think Geoff is closer to Brody than Bridgette. :XD: :D

But again, the fact that they had to return thanks to an injury is what I don't like. Did they deserve to be a finalist/winner? Yes, no doubt. They played a great game! But at the same, I feel like it made it more unfair for teams like the Best Friends, who probably would've gone on to he finale had they had not had to withdrawal.

Sanders and MacArthur (Police Cadets) - I never would've thought they would make it as far as they did. But for good reason, I am happy that they did. Their run during the final 4 episodes was extraordinary, and was probably the best development that any team offered this season. After dissing Sanders for being "deadweight" early in the season, MacArthur really learns how she is the weak one. I mean, Sanders basically led the team to the finale with a broken arm. She used that broken arm to save their butts in the finale! And she still wouldn't stop at anything, even after passing out!! :dummy:

MacArthur's plot with Brody also looks like it's going to work out as well. Personally, this may be a bit of a weird ship, but it works for me. I like BroArthur! It even sounds right!

After watching the finale, I think I can say that Sanders is one of the toughest contestants in the series history, and that MacArthur is the sidekick, but she isn't far behind, going as far as to saving Josee's life. Did they deserve to be a finalist/winner? No question, yes! They were the most deserving team out of everyone when it was all said and done.

So with that being said, I would rank the teams like this in terms of likability:

:bulletgreen: Crimson and Ennui
:bulletgreen: Sanders and MacArthur
:bulletgreen: Emma and Kitty
:bulletgreen: Geoff and Brody
:bulletblue: Tom and Jen
:bulletblue: Noah and Owen
:bulletblue: Rock and Spud
:bulletblue: Dwayne and Junior
:bulletblue: Carrie and Devin
:bulletwhite: Chet and Lorenzo
:bulletwhite: Gerry and Pete
:bulletwhite: Jacques and Josee
:bulletorange: Mary and Ellody
:bulletorange: Kelly and Taylor
:bulletorange: Jay and Mickey
:bulletorange: Ryan and Stephanie
:bulletorange: Laurie and Miles
:bulletred: Leonard and Tammy

Overall: This cast is very mixed bag for the most part. However, I can definitely say that based on these eliminations, the right teams got sent home first, and the right teams went very far into the game.

Final Cast Ranking: 8.5/10 :)

2. Episodes

The episodes, in general, were extremely well written. Compared to some of the past TD seasons, you could say that they are on another level at this point. There were a few duds in the mix, but most were pretty enjoyable. My full rankings go like this:

:bulletwhite: "Down and Outback" (E14) (7.5)

:bulletwhite: "Lord of the Ring Toss" (E17) (7)

:bulletwhite: "French is an Eiffel Language" (E3) (7)

:bulletwhite: "Mediterranean Homesick Blues" (E4) (7)

:bulletorange: "El Bunny Supremo" (E20) (6.5)

:bulletorange: "My Way or Zimbabwe" (E12) (5.5)

:bulletred: "Brazilian Pain Forest" (E6) (5)

:bulletred: "Ca-Noodling" (E21) (4.5)

Final Episode Ranking: 8/10

3. Development/Growth to TD

WOW! Fresh TV must've heard our cries, because they were flat out SOLID with character development this season. Almost everything that they tried to improve ended up working to perfection, and even if it wasn't perfect, it was pretty close!

My favorite thing about the Ridonculous Race compared to Total Drama was the fact that the elimination method was plain, simple, and satisfying. No more slingshots, war canons, or God forbid giant toilets. :x The eliminated team was just simply eliminated and left wherever they were competing in during said challenge. In Total Drama, we watched how each character is either regretful, moving on, not giving up, or in the case of TDAS, we see how each character was derailed from where they started. In TDRR, we are treated to a short montage of moments from the eliminated team, and how they learned a lot and how they are also happier than they started the race. :) I can say, without a doubt in the world, that this was the best elimination method the series has ever done. :evillaugh:

And again, everyone had some sort of happy ending. From their elimination, to how they played, to their interactions, to the very end of the race, each character is better off now than they were at the start of the race. We had Emma learning how her Sister is more important than the million, Sanders showing just how strong she truly is and getting a chance to shine, MacArthur realizing how she isn't the strongest, and that she should treat Sanders better, Crimson and Ennui opening up to each other for an even more solid relationship. Hell, even Jacques and Josee are trying to learn from their actions! :O I thought the final scene with the whole cast was such a perfect ending to the season. It shows all of the growth and no conflicts whatsoever. Just imagine a final TDAS or TDPI picture! :XD: :faint:

And once again Terry, THANK YOU FOR NO BALLOON SCENES! :phew:

Even Don was an improvement! My God, I mean 2 episodes in, and I already like him more than I ever liked Chris! He is such a fair host, who actually cares about the safety of his contestants! :D He even called out the Ice Dancers, which I think is hilarious! :XD: He stepped in when Devin got hurt, while Chris would probably just laugh at him. He gave people penalties and followed the rules, while Chris would just sip his tea and give the rule breaking team a thumbs up for good sportsmanship. Sure, he was still an egoistic person. But compared to Chris, his ego looks like a scared 6 month old Dachshund.

Overall, I think that based on the development for the cast, host, episodes, series, and elimination method, there is no doubt that they perfected this. I can't believe I'm about to do this, but I'm giving this category a PERFECT score! :D

Final Development/Growth to TD Ranking: 10/10 :D

4. Biggest Plots

What season would be complete without a few major plots and great stories? And like I said, most of them worked out to absolute perfection! So I'll go ahead and take a quick look at what I think we're the 5 biggest plots throughout TDRR.

:bulletgreen: Emma and Noah's relationship

You would think that after the entire fandom begged for Noah to get another chance, that the writers would give him a plot, right? Welp, I'm happy to say that they did! :D And honestly, they probably couldn't have chosen a better girlfriend for Noah than Emma. They're both really neutral characters, they like to focus on the game, and they are both really serious about their plans, which is always a part of their personality.

While it did take them a while to get going somewhere, it felt so relieving when they finally became canon. I like how they took it a bit slow, yet they didn't drag it out for the entire season at the same time. Emma is not exactly the one to get distracted in 5 seconds *stares at Noah*. But again, the final result was satisfying, when Emma finally kissed him at his elimination. Even though Emma didn't win like she said, they still became a couple, and they were still able to leave that way.

So yes, I definitely ship "Noma", or "Nemma", whatever you want to call it. :XD: And I was a big fan of this plot as well! :)

:bulletblue: The Police Cadets vs. The Ice Dancers

Every season, we always seem to get a decent rivalry to watch. From Heather vs. Alejandro to Jo vs. Lightning, the possibilities have always been limitless. And the newest TD rivalry between the Police Cadets and the Ice Dancers is no exception at all.

Easily the two most physical teams in the game, their rivalry really stands out when it matters most. And the cool thing is that it isn't one sided, either! The Ice Dancers and Cadets took turns winning challenges against each other, from E13 and E24 with the Ice Dancers winning to E20 and E26 with the Cadets winning, there was never a time where it wasn't intense to watch. And even after saving Josee's life, MacArthur and Josee still never had any respect for each other.

I feel like they can do a lot with this rivalry. But I'm not sure if I want the Cadets to return, in fear that they will get derailed.

:bulletblue: Chet and Lorenzo getting along

If the Cadets vs. the Ice Dancers was the main conflict on the 2nd half of the season, then Chet and Lorenzo's story was the main conflict of the 1st half. However, this one actually involved one team. Chet and Lorenzo had never really liked each other, and for the first 8 episodes or so, they were really showing us that OVER and OVER. Their constant bickering got old very quick, and they just became unbearable to listen to. (Again, I'm sorry for picking them to win. :cries:)

But finally, at around Episode 9 and there, the writers seem to give us hints of them getting along a little bit. Even if it still is mostly arguing, we could tell that it wasn't as bad as it was at first. And once Episode 13 rolled around, they finally started to get along, and that actually made them fun to watch!

Despite the early elimination and only being friends on screen for a short amount of time, it worked out in their favor, and that's about all I can ask for! :)

:bulletwhite: Carrie and Devin crushing on each other

Oh wow. I think we all knew that this would be a major storyline throughout the Ridonculous Race. But it worked out in a different way than we all thought it would. Some ideas were awful, but others were good!

At the start of the race, we learn that Carrie has had a crush on Devin forever, and is afraid to tell him in fear of ruining their friendship, and since Devin already has a girlfriend. After a great deal of nothing happening for 13 episodes, Devin's girlfriend breaks up with him, and Carrie tries to take advantage of this. In some ways, it works! But at other times (especially in "Down and Outback") it made her one of the most unlikable characters on the show. I wish she would've given Devin more support instead of trying to force his way over it.

After the "stages of breakup", Devin finally realizes that he loves Carrie, but Carrie is so sick of waiting that she tries to act independent. This is their biggest problem! This plot was DRAGGED out for as long as it possibly could've been dragged out. And once we got to finale week, it just became harder to watch. Finally, in "Last Tango in Buenos Aires", they admit they love each other and finally get together, before Devin breaks all of his bones and they have to withdraw.

Again, they couldn't have just had them leave in a normal elimination? I still think that by having them leave in "Dude Buggies", the plot wouldn't have been as dragged out as it was, and there wouldn't be as much controversy surrounding Geoff and Brody reaching the finale, because they wouldn't have thrown the challenge in "Ca-Noodling".

:bulletorange: Ryan and Stephanie becoming the Dater Haters

If I have learned anything in my 2 years of dA critiquing, it's that no show is perfect. And this plot is one of the reasons why TDRR wasn't perfect. Most people (including me) figured that Ryan and Stephanie wouldn't get far, considering that they really had nothing to work with at the start of the race.

Boy, were we all wrong?

Stephanie, rather than being the supportive, happy gymnast that she is, turns into more of a villainous, grouchy, preppy type girl, which annoys both Ryan and the audience watching. Episodes 7, 8, 9, and 18 are the two at their worst. Literally, all they did was argue at each other the whole time, just the same old "YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING RIGHT!" from Stephanie, and the "STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO!" from Ryan.

But close to the end of their run, they show signs of getting back together. And all of a sudden, they are acting like a team again. Finally, in "Darjeel With It", they get back together, and they stay together even with their unfortunate elimination.

The writers probably could've made them less annoying to listen to. It doesn't always have to be screaming you know! Sadly, this all made Stephanie one of the worst characters on the show, and even Ryan had some low moments. The only reason it's getting an orange bullet is because they got a happy ending.

Final Big Moments Ranking: 8/10

5. Miscellaneous

In every season, there are the little things that count the most. This has never been more true than it was in the Ridoncuous Race. A few things really stood out to me, and in some cases, it worked out very well.

:bulletgreen: The Locations

The series definitely handled the locations better here than they did in TDWT. At the start of every episode, they gave a full description of each city they were visiting, and normally a few interesting facts. Sometimes, the challenges involved something very close to said location's culture or heritage. And I think that it just gave the whole episode a more "Amazing Race" feeling.

:bulletgreen: The Soundtrack

Who would've thought that I would be making such a big deal about the soundtrack! Well, I am! This soundtrack for the show was different from the one used in Total Drama, and it sounded great. The last week introduced a few new dramatic music tracks that made the show more fun to watch, more intense, and definitely more dramatic.

I would also like to add that I like this theme song more than the 20 second Total Drama theme song. Then again, this was made to be 20 seconds, while "I Wanna Be Famous" was meant to be a minute long. So I won't be too hard on that. :)

:bulletgreen: The Animation

This is something that's expected and will only get better over time. But I don't care, I have to include it. The animation was stellar this season! Very vibrant, very clear, and they even managed to use a bit of CGI in the finale, without making it dreadfully obvious at the same time!

:bulletgreen: Not Rushing Through the Episodes

What a huge improvement the writers made compared to Total Drama! In each episode, the writers wouldn't waste any time trying to get started with the challenge, immediately having the winning team grab the first hint of the day and go from there. They took advantage of every minute that they had, and focused solely on the race. This was tough at first, consdiering that there are 18 teams competing in just 30 minutes, but this got much better by the time the show got down to around 8 teams.

Final Miscellaneous Ranking: 9/10

Overall Summary: The Ridonculous Race is exactly what this series needed. In fact, I wouldn't mind it if Fresh stuck with the Ridonculous Race and ditched Total Drama. There are so many things done better over Total Drama in TDRR, and for most of the topics, it's not even close! I think I can safely say that the series is back on its feet, and I hope the writers can tell now what they have to do to make a season/series great. I'm going to hope for a stellar TD season (if we get a S6 of course ^^; ) and we will see how they will do there. But for now, the Ridonculous Race tops my rankings. Yes, dare I say it, it is my favorite of all TD related shows. I can't wait to see what they can do next time!

Final Season Ranking: 8.5/10

This Spin-Off is far better than reboot of Total Drama Island 2023, because is Don is the complete opposite of Chris, he is Kind and cares about the rules, he isn't nearly as sadistic and doesn't change the rules in to unfair fashion as often, so Don is better host in my opinion
